Consentious treatment

Goedebuur offers an individualized therapy for Your wellbeing

Goedebuur ensures you are treated by a professional and expert team. Treatment involves choosing the therapies that best fit your symptoms and achieve your treatment goals. The basis of treatment is evidence-based behavioral therapy.

This could be Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schemetherapy, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) or Running Therapy. Most of our psychologist are also familiar with using EMDR as a treatment method. In addition to psychological treatment, dietetics, pharmacotherapy, psychomotor therapy (PMT) or art therapy may be useful.

Cognitive behavioral therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a proven effective form of psychotherapy, helps you look at problems differently and tackle them in a different way. The therapy has two parts: cognitive therapy and behavioral therapy. In cognitive therapy, you explore with your practitioner whether your way of thinking is correct and how you can break through these thoughts. Behavioral therapy focuses on breaking through avoidance of certain situations, with the goal of dealing with anxiety or negative thoughts in a different way.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focuses on increasing the capacity to accept setbacks. According to this treatment, daily symptoms decrease when people learn to accept their suffering instead of fighting against it. This provides more space to work toward what is important in life and promotes a sense of accomplishment. ACT involves practicing six skills: acceptance (accepting that which you cannot change), defusion (letting go of thoughts), yourself as context (being flexible with your self-image), here and now (mindfulness), values (that which is most important) and committed action (investing in your values). These skills contribute to psychological resilience and can be applied to a variety of psychological problems. At Goedebuur, almost all practitioners are trained in ACT. This means that in different disciplines components of ACT will pass by.

Pharmacotherapy

Besides or instead of a psychological treatment can be chosen for a drug treatment. For example with antidepressants. Use of medication can be just as effective as psychological treatment. Together with your practitioner, you will make the decision to start medication. During treatment, methods will be used to track your mood or anxiety symptoms and monitor side effects.

Running Therapy

Running Therapy involves the therapeutic use of running as a complementary form of treatment for psychological symptoms. The therapy is usually offered in group form. The goal is to be able to do a gentle endurance run independently. Group therapy consists of eight sessions of about 90 minutes in which different themes are offered. Examples include: dosing, mindful running and running technique. Groups generally consist of three to six participants.

Goals in Running Therapy can be both physical and mental. A goal may be to increase stamina, but just as important are themes such as: sensing and responding to body signals, noticing (strict) thoughts, learning to dose and experiencing pleasure in movement. Movement is essential in human existence and in the recovery from mental illness.

There are many different ways to exercise (swimming, yoga, walking, gym, etc.). The themes and principles of Running Therapy are applicable to most other forms of movement. Thus, a client need not set a goal of becoming a “runner” from now on. However, some interest in running is necessary to participate in the group. Group members are expected to attend sessions and, in addition, set the goal of exercising independently at least once a week.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is an effective conversational treatment method for mental disorders and problems, focusing on conversations between you and your practitioner. The goal of psychotherapy is to reduce or better manage psychological symptoms. Your commitment and the expertise of the psychotherapist are both important. The result depends on the nature of the problems and one’s own abilities. Psychotherapy is hard work and often involves ups and downs. Although successful psychotherapy does not guarantee lifelong happiness or changing circumstances such as a financial difficulties or unemployment, it can help one learn to better manage problems. Psychotherapy can be used for single and multiple, complex psychological problems and often for personality problems. There is a wide variety of treatment situations, treatment intensity and methods and techniques for psychotherapy.

Systemic therapy

System therapy, also called relationship and family therapy, involves the involvement of important loved ones in therapy. Therapy focuses primarily on the patterns of interaction between those involved and improving them. Important absentees are also taken into account. The premise of systemic therapy is that problems are always influenced by the social, relational and cultural context. Environmental factors and their influence on the problem and those involved are discussed. During therapy, all involved gain insight into their mutual reactions and influence in order to work toward a solution.

Imaginaire rescripting

Imaginary rescripting (ImRs) is a technique that involves looking at traumatic memories from childhood in an attempt to change the meaning of that experience. First, you are asked to imagine the memory. Next, you are asked how you would like this event to end. The practitioner will guide you in imagining the different ending of the event.

ImRs also gives you the opportunity to express the feelings, needs and actions you had to suppress at that moment. The therapist guides you in discovering your needs and actions. The therapist may also take a role in the imagery.

Dietetics

Dietary treatment can be used as part of treatment at Goedebuur. Mental problems and nutritional/eating problems can be related. For example, decreased appetite in depression, binge eating as a coping mechanism, vitamin deficiencies as a consequence or possible cause of psychological problems, or gastrointestinal problems in stress. The dietary treatment always starts with an intake interview where the current problems regarding the diet are inventoried, where client and dietician together examine the request for help and together determine how to work on it. We often work with an eating diary, or a derivative of this. Sometimes exposure is used, i.e. guided practice with eating foods that are feared. The goal is to achieve as healthy a diet as possible within the framework of what is feasible for the individual client, and with this to lay a healthy foundation to support the therapy.

Psychomotor therapy

Psychological symptoms, such as stress, negative mood, anxiety, uncertainty and confusion, can also manifest physically. A psychomotor therapist focuses specifically on the symptoms expressed by the body, such as physical tensions, body language, posture, movement patterns, breathing and body perception. They will help understand your physical signs through body-oriented exercises.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy

Mindfulness is a valuable skill in which you focus your full attention on the present moment. This means being consciously present to what you are doing without being distracted by thoughts of the past or the future. It is applied in many aspects of life and has proven effective in reducing various challenges, including stress, anxiety, burnout and being tensed. In addition, mindfulness can improve overall quality of life by promoting emotional well-being and strengthening resilience.

Schematherapy

Schematherapy can be used for long-term symptoms or personality problems. Everyone has distinct beliefs about themselves, others and the world that are formed during early childhood, through temperament, life experiences and interactions with significant others. Schematherapy helps in understanding and changing deep-seated patterns.

Questionnaires will be used to explore how childhood experiences influence how you think and act. You learn to recognize your patterns and change your way of perceiving certain situations. As a result, we expect to strengthen your resilience. You will also learn to recognize your needs and deal with them in a healthier way. This will allow you to take better control of your life and improve your relationships with others.

EMDR

EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a form of treatment for traumatic events. These could include sexual abuse, violence or an accident. If these experiences cause daily problems, EMDR can help. During treatment, you are asked to think back to the traumatic event while the therapist distracts you. This is usually done through eye movements, but can also be done through sound, vibration and/or other distractions. EMDR has the advantage of being proven effective and does not require extensive preparation. Keep in mind, however, that a session may affect you. You may temporarily feel more unstable or experience headaches. These symptoms will pass over time.

Art therapy

In art therapy, various visual materials, tools and techniques such as painting, drawing, textile working, metal working, stone working and wood working are used in a structured manner.

During this process you can have physical, sensory, emotional and cognitive experiences. What is special about visual therapy is that the end result is tangible. You can let go of the artwork, put it away, look back at it and in this way experience what it is like to do or experience something in a different way. Visual therapy is often seen as a direct route to deeper emotional layers. It can confront you with patterns in thinking, feeling and acting, in the safe environment of Goedebuur.

Exposure

In exposure, the client is asked to incrementally expose herself to what she is most afraid of. The goal is for the anxiety to decrease as a result of the exposure. Exposure (in vivo) is an effective intervention in many anxiety disorders (panic disorder with agoraphobia, specific phobias, social phobia and in combination with response prevention in obsessive-compulsive disorder). Certainly where avoidance is an important element in the clinical picture, there is no reason a priori to use a psychological intervention other than exposure. At Goedebuur, exposure is offered as an intervention in various ways, depending on the nature of the problem. The therapist (psychologist or overarching therapist) is closely involved in drawing up the client’s exposure program and sees to it that the client eventually (can) perform the exposure alone and independently. Attention is also paid to not giving in to the urge to avoid situations (relapse prevention). The exposure can take place indoors or outdoors, imaginary or in real life. In addition, in the future VR glasses could be used as an additional manner to practice exposure.

Affect phobia therapy

Affect phobia therapy (AFT) is an integrative psychotherapy for the treatment of anxiety, depression and avoidant personality disorders (Cluster C in the DSM 5). McCullough, the founder of AFT, used the behavioral therapy term “affect phobia” to characterize fear of feeling. So the phobia in this case is not a fear of something outside the person, such as rooms or spiders, but an (unconscious) fear of desires and feelings within the person: an internal phobia. The AFT therapist focuses therapy on both the inner experience (such as a negative self-image and feelings of sadness, anger or pleasure) and the interpersonal elements (such as social avoidance). Thus, clients can be helped to develop self-confidence and become more in touch with their own feelings, and from there encourage them to experiment with new behaviors.

Social work

Depending on your help request, a social worker may be helpful. The requests for help may be questions around financial applications or requests for counseling support. If you have a question for which the social worker may be able to provide support, this will be discussed within the team. Provided that you want this yourself.

Job coach

Work and resuming work is an important component of well-being. For those who have a clear request for help in that area, there is the possibility to get acquainted with our Jobcoach. The job coach will assess in a few conversations whether he can be of significance. It is important to mention that the job coach is not part of the team but works in parallel and organizes his budget with the UWV, the municipality or your employer.
